Injured Worker Well-Being
As with everything that starts there is a reason for it. Injured Worker Wellbeing has been discussed among everyone at Craig’s Table for a long time. We sat together and looked at the lists of common question that the injured worker community asked (“why wasn’t I told?”) and the common request from the industry providers (“can you pass on this information?”).
Craig’s Table then carefully went through all the information we had been asked for; simple things, odds things, ‘can I’ things, ‘do I have to’ things, direction things, ‘how do I say that’ things, ‘how do we have that conversation’ things. It would actually be very difficult to find a question, query or concern that we haven’t been asked or needed to find information about.
Once the framework was written up, it was clear that assistance was required … information needed to be shared without fear of favour. The information needed to be available around the clock and in a format that was simple, whilst at the same time provided a way forward for every section of the workers compensation system, regardless of which of the 11 different jurisdictions was involved. The injured worker community, the employers and the providers all search for “something” outside of their known connections.
Remote, regional and rural people all need information and a way of finding out “how to pull something together”.
The injured worker community extends past the injured worker to include the family and friends of the injured person. These people are relied upon to assist, they also have questions that require answers.
Once Craig’s Table had the framework, it was then working out how to put everything together and when was the appropriate time.
We deliberately selected a week in order to be able to build on the inaugural week (31st May – 4th June).
We deliberately selected the timeframe that went either side of the 1st June (International Injured Worker Day).
We deliberately selected the information that was most asked for.
Each of the presenters are professionals in their own right within the area they represent. For example, the pharmacist is outlining the questions that can be asked and the extra information that all pharmacists can provide. The dentist is speaking about oral concerns in regards to long-term prescription medication. The exercise physiologist is explaining the how and the why exercise forms a solid part of every recovery. We have a specialist speaking about all the warning signs to be aware of in regards to self-harm so that steps can be taken long before lives are at risk or lost.
Craig’s Table also understood that this information would be simple to pull together and present at a conference. We also understood that a large percentage of the people who we needed to reach neither have the time nor can afford to attend a conference. If a member of the injured worker community lives in a remote area of Western Australia, it was very unlikely they would travel to Sydney to attend a conference. Then there are the times when information is just searched for online at all hours of the day and night. The only solution was to have each of the presenters pre-record and put everything on to Craig’s Table YouTube channel.
Then came the easiest part, finding “something” that told the journey, the reason & and the outcomes.
Three words (gathering bridge trust) were provided to proud Wiradjuri woman Carla Williams to create “connections”.
Injured Worker Well-Being Week is all about the connections we have, the connections we need to have, or the connections we rely on to be in place.
