LRUB- Research Articles

A new study, published in the journal PLUS ONE, involved 76 young adults, aged between 17 and 35. All participants had severe depression and usually subscribed to a diet high in processed foods and sugar.

There is strong epidemiological evidence that poor diet is associated with depression. The reverse has also been shown, namely that eating a healthy diet rich in fruit, vegetables, fish and lean meat, is associated with reduced risk of depression. To date, only one randomised controlled trial (RCT) has been conducted with elevated depression symptoms being an inclusion criterion, with results showing that a diet intervention can reduce clinical levels of depression. . No such RCTs have been performed in young adults.  Read the full article here…

New guidelines for children with hearing loss

Credit to Murdoch Children’s Research Institute,

A network of medical experts has produced Australia’s first national guidelines to streamline the management of children with hearing loss. Published in the latest edition of the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, the guidelines also consider limited resource settings and family preferences. According to  Dr Valerie Sung, from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, who chairs the CHAMP network, says the guidelines will help streamline the management of hearing loss cases.

The guidelines will be used by paediatricians, otolaryngologists and geneticists, and will also be helpful for general practitioners in Australia.
